Another report by Juniper Research issued this month predicts a significant surge in Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD). The report found that SVOD services, such as those provided by Amazon and Netflix, will take the market from an estimated $64 billion in 2017 to $120 Billion over the next 5 years.

In Canada, TELUS selected Ericsson top enhance its Optik TV service, combining features of previous apps to enable TELUS customers to watch live TV, set recordings, and watch On Demand content, from a single, mobile interface.

In the US, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) slapped the Sinclair Broadcast Group with a more than $13 million dollar fine for failing to disclose third-party sponsored content. The FCC alleges that Sinclair aired third-party sponsored content over 1,700 times - either as stories or news coverage that aired during local news or as 30-minute television programs. This is the largest fine the FCC has ever issued for violation of sponsorship identification rules.

Cloud News

PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia (H3I) selected the Nokia Cloud Packet Core solution to help contend with the rapid data demands growing in Indonesia. H3I picked Nokia to evolve its mobile packet core to a cloud-based architecture, as part of its larger digital transformation initiative to provide a superior customer experience and increase profitability.

Nokia's software-defined venture, Nuage Networks, also announced it has been selected to support Fujitsu's Cloud Service K5's global expansion efforts in Japan, Europe and North America, and continuing to new data centers in Singapore and Australia. The deployment is a global first, claiming to be the largest OpenStack cloud service offering K5's Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) using both virtual machines (VMs) and bare metal services, managed by OpenStack Ironic.

In other cloud news, Cloudify announced the release of 4.2. This new release includes new features aimed at easing the orchestration of demanding cloud applications and network services for service providers and enterprises. Features include a native Kubernetes provider, better user governance, multi-tenancy, SSO, and new Insights-as-a-Service.

MATRIXX Software announced the availability of MATRIXX Digital Commerce on the Google Cloud Platform. The solution provides a single platform that brings together traditionally separate functions such as product lifecycle management, customer engagement, service delivery and monetization.

VeloCloud announced that its VeroCloud Edge solution is now available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enable enterprises to extend cloud-delivered SD-WAN to AWS to enhance flexibility and elasticity.

Security News

Mobileum announced that it has launched its Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered mobile security solution with Tier 1 operators on three continents. The solution helps operators protect their networks from internal and external attacks, contend with fraud and address the emergence of SS7 Diameter threats.

Telco System and Trend Micro announced the launch of a joint security solution for virtual services. This is the first solution to combine vSecurity VNF based on Telco Systems' NFVTime and Trend Micro's Virtual Network Function Suite (VNFS). The joint solution is designed to provide network security services, including intrusion prevention and web security, with Arm-based uCPE white-box solutions.

The FirstNet Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and AT&T continue to advance the adoption of their modernization plan for first responders. This month FirstNet announced that three additional US States have opted into FirstNet to provide critical information, coordinated communications across agencies, and foster other innovations and new job growth. The latest states joining FirstNet include Illinois, Ohio, and Vermont.

B/OSS News

There were also some encouraging signs from within B/OSS this month, with four notable deployment announcements. CSG announced that TELUS is now leveraging their managed services program to create an efficient cloud-based virtual back office to fulfill billing, contract management and financial management of their U.S. and international voice termination business.
