COMET News: May 2014

Telefonica had a very busy month, announcing major initiatives in mobile money, mobile advertising, and in-air connectivity - - the kinds of innovations that represent the CSP of future.

Is there Wi-Fi on Mars?

Based on recent data, the possibility for interplanetary communications has been raised.  Eyeing the news as an opportunity, curated-Wi-Fi innovator Devicescape is sponsoring a team of Cornell University Students as they design and build the next generation of Mars rovers. No word yet on how to handle roaming charges.

Charter debuts 802.11ac router

As Internet service providers ratchet up the speed of broadband delivered to consumers and businesses, a fundamental truth of networking becomes clear: when it comes to Wi-Fi speeds, performance is only as good as the weakest link in the signal chain. Charter Communications hopes to head off these concerns with an ultra-fast router it debuted on April 17. Beginning May 16th, it will begin rolling out a fully-managed, dual-band concurrent 802.11ac wireless router, bringing Charter customers the capability to receive the fastest Wi-Fi experience.

Charter's new router fully supports the latest wireless specification from the IEEE, 802.11ac, which was ratified in January. This new specification is up to ten times faster than the previous iteration, 802.11n. The speedy new router from Charter, supplied by NETGEAR, is capable of delivering well over the maximum 100Mbps offered by Charter Internet Ultra, throughout the entire home.

Jim Blackley, Executive Vice President of Engineering, Charter Communications, commented on the news. "In most situations, the end customer experience is either limited by the maximum wired speed of the Internet connection, or the capabilities of the wireless router. With the combination of Charter's fast-wired Internet speeds and the new dual-band 802.11ac high performance router, customers will be able to unleash the full power of Charter Internet with superior speeds throughout the home."

While many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have plans to distribute routers based on the new standard, Charter is the first ISP in its markets to offer customers a high performance 802.11ac wireless router.

Telefonica innovates across the board

Telefonica had a very busy month, announcing major initiatives in mobile money, mobile advertising, and in-air connectivity. As the future of legacy revenue streams becomes cloudy, these are the kinds of innovations that represent the CSP of future.

Everyone loves staying connected, especially while traveling. Many airliners that operate within the U.S. are outfitted with in-air, high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity, but the same cannot be said in Europe. This is about to change. In early April, Telefonica signed a deal with Eutelsat that will bring in-air connectivity to aircraft in Vueling's fleet. The service relies on next-gen Ka-band satellite systems, which deliver a snappy 20 Mbps experience to the end user.
