ION Network boosts Indonesia connectivity with Ciena WaveLogic 6 Extreme

ION Network Leverages Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme to Deliver High-Bandwidth Services on ION Cable System 1

New cable with Ciena’s coherent optics builds foundation for Indonesia’s expanding digital economy
Connecting over 250,000 families in Indonesia with high-performance connectivity

ION Network (PT Parsaoran Global Datatrans), previously HSPnet, is deploying Ciena's (NYSE: CIEN) WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) on its newest submarine cable, ION Cable System 1 (ICS1), to boost network reliability for more than 250,000 homes across Bali, Java, and Sumatra in Indonesia.

Spanning more than 2,000 km from Jakarta to Singapore across submarine and protected Sumatra terrestrial routes, ICS1 will run on Ciena’s 6500 platform powered by WL6e coherent optics to deliver wavelength services up to 1.2 Tb/s and up to 24 Tb/s of end-to-end capacity. This will increase total capacity to 288 Tb/s across six cable segments using two fiber pairs. The ICS1 will also leverage Ciena’s advanced Layer 0 (L0) control plane capabilities to ensure high service availability and operational efficiency.

“ION Network is committed to accelerating digitalization in Indonesia, and ICS1 will help drive this vision with the help of Ciena’s market-leading optical technology,” said Daniel Simanjuntak, Chief Technology Officer, ION Network. “With a new transmission network in place, we will be better prepared to develop our Fiber-to-the Home network and expand our connectivity support to more islands in Indonesia.”

“ION Network has established a reputation as a trusted source of high-quality, reliable, and secure Internet connectivity,” said Alex Wong, Regional Managing Director, ASEAN, Ciena. “With Ciena’s proven optical technology underpinning the new ICS1, ION Network is well-positioned to address the projected bandwidth demand driven by artificial intelligence and cloud applications.”

ICS1 is set to be live at the end of 2026, and the deployment of Ciena’s optical innovations is in collaboration with PT Lancs Arche Consumma (LANCS). ION Network already leverages Ciena’s optical technology to support the delivery of high-capacity services on its B3JS (Jakarta-Bangka-Bintan-Batam-Singapore) and BDMCS (Batam-Dumai-Medan) cable systems. The transmission routes, totaling around 2,000km across both underwater and land cables, are the foundation of ION Network’s backbone connectivity.
