In a person that would sound like a threat. Kiko considers how much she owes Ninan. He may not be handsome but he did put himself in harm’s way for me. If it were reversed, he would certainly stay for me. And he doesn’t fully trust this situation. If there is an APB out for me I cannot get clear without either his or Dawn’s help. She relaxes.
Reading her body language of capitulation, Nightingale opens the food dispensary station. “When you are finished your meal, the blue directional light bars on the hall walls will guide you to a vacant apartment. You can key the door to your hand and voice print. There you can bathe and have your cloths sonically laundered. First thing tomorrow, please report for a checkup and stress test. We insist.” Kiko-Lyn nods her acceptance as she doubles down to her first meal in over two days.
Character Assimilation
Dawn scans Jonathon’s journal and, together with the recordings retrieved from Kiko-Lyn and Ninan’s videos of Jonathon’s facility, uploads it to Chinua Mills. She slips on a VR mask.
Mills immediately responds via virtual telepresence, “Dawn, this is what we needed for our fine grain assessment of Jonathon Blake. I have compared the handwriting with other samples we obtained and it is a match for his hand. We are sending this to several psychologists and business lawyers we have on associate’s retainers. They will use this journal to derive the personality index for Mr. Blake and for evaluating the probability functions for modeling his decision matrix.
“We would like you to provide assessments of Kiko-Lyn and Ninan based on your observations of the recent events.” 3D images of the two companions appear inside the virtual room. “Provide your impressions of the subjects. Our target is to complete these activities is under eight hours.” A clock image rapidly spins the hands eight hours forward. “As this data arrives, we will begin modeling scenarios for a baseline extrapolation simulation – probable outcomes given the continuation of the status quo without any further intervention on our part.” A branching timeline, with broad action probabilities is displayed. “At that point we will call a VR conference meeting and determine a course of action."
Dawn, “So I was right; this situation requires our active intervention. We’re going to help her!”
“Dawn, my monitoring of your vitals, in reaction to these displayed images, indicates you are developing an attachment to Kiko-Lyn Bear. As you are no longer dispassionate and uninvolved, your emotions cannot feed into the mediation judgement. Your role is being reassigned. You are to be Kiko-Lyn’s advocate counsel in the mediation. I’ve arranged with Nightingale for everyone to stay several days in apartments on site. During this time, observe and refine their personality encoding for our behavior models. Downstream, we need this as accurate as possible. Beyond this specific mediation, we want you to consider a pro/con recommendation for their potential use to our larger organization. Should I recruit either of them? And if so, in what capacity?”
Dawn reaches back to touch the lump under her skin at the base of her neck. There lies the core of the wireless brain-machine interface she agreed to embed when she joined the Chinua Mills Corporation. Injected Neural Dust, thousands of piezoelectric microbe-sized sensor nodes, are scattered in her brain, reading local electrophysiological data. They respond to a subdural ultrasound transceiver beneath her skull by backscatter communication. She does not regret grafting her soul to this larger being, but she worries if her decisions are fully her own: Is the data path really only outbound? Does the chip leak group emotions and the collective drive into her sense of self? She knows the inverse is constantly happening. Her emotional matrix, along with all the other Mills’ associates, is broadcast out and aggregated into the emotional state functions of the neural net that makes up the decision entity of Chinua Mills. In order to give personality to the artificial intelligence, an aggregation of the collected will and current feelings of the corporate associates is calibrated near-real-time into its decision matrix. Chinua was not, as far as they could tell, sentient. Nevertheless, the aggregate "feelings" of the associates provide the operational decision matrix with a heuristically accurate semblance of human personality. She rubs her face. It is in times like these, when she needs to assess others for inclusion, where her own life decisions weigh heavy.
“Additionally, prepare a video blog with the images from this ‘trophy room’ as a character attack on Jonathon Mills. We will have it on hand if a decision to apply propaganda pressure is needed.” Dawn thinks it even knows when I need to lose myself in my work.
Media Manipulations
Showered and with a short, but deep, nap behind her, Kiko-Lyn flicks her GoogglesTM to full VR. Faced with two or more days of waiting on Ninan’s recovery, she keys up her backlog of subscribed video content. Her media interface personal-agent has a virtual menu ready. Her personally tailored channels of music, video, and interactive games are displayed. Each publishing service has a specific virtual queue channel. Following her policy mandates and aware of her tastes, the media software assistant searches and subscribes to content. It intercepts unwanted advertisements and solicitations. It should be safe to access the cloud resident agent here. As the user, her identity remains individual and private, buffered from distributors. Her whereabouts are hidden behind the virtual circuit access path to the cloud-based agent.
