Bittium Joins iMUGS2 to Develop Unmanned Systems

Bittium announced its continued participation in developing unmanned systems as part of the iMUGS2 project, a European consortium of leading defense and technology players. The project aims to create the next generation of interoperable unmanned ground and aerial systems, with a goal of standardizing these platforms across Europe.

A consortium uniting Europe’s leading defense, research, and technology players has launched the iMUGS2 project, which will develop the next generation of interoperable unmanned ground systems and command, control, and communication systems. The aim of the project is to standardize European-wide unmanned ground systems and their command, control and communication systems, as well as aerial unmanned systems and their control systems.

Bittium continues in the iMUGS2 (integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System) project the development of a resilient and networked command and control system and autonomous and cooperative use of unmanned systems in challenging operating environments. In the project, Bittium is responsible for the development of a secure and resilient IP (Internet Protocol) based data transfer solution, which includes the tactical routers of the Bittium Tough SDR™ product family and the Bittium Tactical Network Management™ system. The solution enables broadband and resilient data transfer for unmanned ground systems, between unmanned aerial systems and the command post, and for the dismounted soldier system. The project will continue until the end of 2028.

The iMUGS2 project is a continuation of the successful iMUGS project, which started in 2020. The project is being carried out in cooperation between 10 member countries of the European Union: Belgium, Estonia, Spain, France, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Finland, Hungary, and Sweden. The iMUGS2 project has a total of 25 partners, and the project is led by the Estonian company Milrem Robotics. The iMUGS project has been allocated EUR 45 million in funding from the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) and the participating countries. iMUGS2 has been selected as one of the projects to be funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF).

The results of the iMUGS project will be integrated into the solutions to be developed in the iMUGS2 project. The iMUGS project has already laid the groundwork for a European-wide ecosystem of unmanned systems. This work will be continued in the iMUGS2 project, further strengthening Europe's defense cooperation and capabilities.
