New Smart OS Enables Faster, More Efficient Residential Broadband Connections

SMARTRG’s SMART/OS™ Enables Seamless Connectivity between Ultra-Broadband Services and the Connected Home

SmartRG Inc today announced a new smart operating system that leverages open scalable vCPE devices and innovative Wi-Fi solutions for easier, more cost-efficient residential broadband service delivery

SmartRG Inc., the leading provider of virtualized wireless gateways for the smart, connected home, announced its innovative SMART/OS™ operating system today. As service providers move to implement Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) platforms and services, SMART/OS offers providers the ability to easily scale and manage vCPE devices to maximize multi-billion dollar investments in broadband for residential service delivery.

“The final connection to their residential customers is one of the most critical touch points for service providers as they look to deliver the bandwidth and services that will be consumed through an ever-increasing variety of wired and wireless devices,” said Jeff McInnis, president and CEO, SmartRG. “SMART/OS empowers carriers to streamline service delivery and fully leverage the emerging connected home and residential IoT markets.”

SMART/OS is an open source, carrier-grade, Linux-based platform with open APIs, delivered through Smart/RG’s innovative SMART/CLOUD. It can be used with nearly any underlying chip configuration, making it fully hardware-agnostic as part of “white box” modular network builds. Its scalable software architecture enables rapid application development, live software upgrades and smooth migration to distributed virtualized network functionality. As networks evolve, SMART/OS software modules can be abstracted into the network core, making centralized management and cross-platform interoperability eminently achievable.

“Carriers are moving to the cloud to scale and manage residential service delivery and they don’t want to be constrained by silo hardware solutions,” said Jeff Heynen, consulting director and senior research analyst at SNL Kagan, an offering from S&P Global Market Intelligence. “They also want the ability to upgrade services at a scale that takes advantage of advancements in broadband technology as soon as they are deployed."

SmartRG also announced general availability of its first product to leverage SMART/OS, the SR400ac carrier-grade Gigabit 802.11ac wireless gateway. Through a savvy combination of software and hardware, the SR400ac delivers top of the line Gigabit performance, while providing truly video-ready Wi-Fi—a perfect match for the ever-increasing demands subscribers place on their broadband service. With its innovative, patented industrial design, the SR400ac embraces the elegant, stylish form and functionality consumers want for their home which has ultimately become the standard for consumer electronics worldwide. Several SmartRG customers are already testing the SR400ac as part of a “managed Wi-Fi” service offering, pairing SmartRG’s cloud-based Device Manager™ remote management platform with Smart/OS-enabled gateways. Using Device Manager, service providers can efficiently view and manage their subscribers’ entire home network, reducing truck rolls and simplifying remote troubleshooting.
