New Online Community Lets Developers Share Open Source Insights, Innovation and Resources

prpl Foundation Launches prpl.works to Mobilize Open Source Developers

Non-profit open-source collaborative prpl Foundation today announced the launch of  a new online community enabling developers to share and collaborate on open source software projects around Android MIPS, Linux MIPs and others

The prpl Foundation today revealed prpl.works, an online community by and for open source developers and users. Active for just a few weeks, the community has already reached over 40,000 developers from around the world.

”The prpl.works site highlights the important work that prpl and its member companies are doing to encourage collaboration across the open source community,” said Art Swift, president of the prpl Foundation, a non-profit foundation focused on enabling open, next-generation datacenter-to-device portable software and virtualized architectures. “The value to the open source community is evidenced by the site’s rapid adoption, based in part on insightful commentary that the community is providing.”

For example, said Swift, a recent post by prpl community manager Eric Schultz, which explores the question of whether the FCC can ban a new operating system, has generated significant discussion across a broad spectrum of open source developers.

In addition to its timely and thought-provoking content, the site features subgroups for creators and developers of open source software – such as Android MIPS, Linux MIPS and others – to share and review innovations and resources for the betterment of their respective communities and the open source movement in general.

Over time, the site is expected to grow organically to encompass a wide range of open source developments and resources.

 Current subgroups include:

  • prplSecurity™ – Links and resources from the prpl security engineering group
  • Android MIPS – Tips and builds for Android integration with MIPS
  • Linux MIPS – Tips, resources and a link to the Linux MIPS website
  • OpenWrt – Tips, resources and links to the prpl engineering group (PEG) for OpenWrt
  • OVP – Forums, resources and links to the Open Virtual Platform website
  • QEMU – Links and resources for developers needing Quick Emulator and virtualizer technology

The announcement of the new prpl.works community parallels the creation by the prpl Foundation of the OpenWrt Summit – the first ever conference focusing exclusively on disruptive OpenWrt technology, which took place in Dublin, Ireland on Oct.8.  Designed to encourage growth and collaboration in the OpenWrt movement, the event was co-located with the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE).
