UTC Commends Controversial Pai FCC Chairmanship

FCC commissioner Ajit Pai's appointment by President Trump as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission receives support from the Utilities Technology Council

The Utilities Technology Council (UTC) congratulates Ajit Pai on his selection by President Trump to be the next Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Pai has been a Commissioner since 2012, and strongly believes in closing the "digital divide."

"We are excited to work with Chairman Pai and his colleagues to ensure that our member electric, natural gas and water utilities are assured access to the information and communications technology they need to ensure the safe, secure and affordable delivery of energy and water services," said Joy Ditto, President and CEO of UTC. "Bridging the "digital divide" while ensuring utilities have access to interference-free spectrum, will help improve our country's economic and national security. The FCC plays a critical role in these areas and Chairman Pai's leadership will be instrumental in accomplishing these objectives."

Since 1948, UTC has been the international trade association for the telecommunications and information technology interests of electric, gas and water utilities and other critical infrastructure industries. UTC shapes the future of utility mission critical technologies by driving innovation, fostering collaboration and influencing public policy. UTC continues to advocate for policies that promote the development of telecommunications and IT to support the safe, reliable, efficient and secure delivery of utility energy and water services to the public at large.

Pai was appointed Chairman of the FCC by President Donald Trump as one of his first official acts after taking office. Pai is the first newly-appointed Republican chairman in almost 12 years. While it is difficult to ascertain what his position will be on major issues and future policy, he is an opponent of net neutrality and is understood to favor less regulation and a strict adherence to the law.
