The Agile Wireless Network

By: Tim Young

You know the stats. Mobile data traffic is growing like crazy, and end-users’ expectations of speed and reliability are becoming more and more difficult to consistently meet. The Cisco VNI estimates that global mobile data traffic will increase nearly tenfold between 2014 and 2019, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57 percent from 2014 to 2019, and hitting 24.3 exabytes per month by 2019. Video will make up a big chunk of this, according to the VNI. Mobile video is forecast to increase 13-fold, accounting for nearly three quarters of all mobile data traffic by 2019…

Avoiding Data Commoditization: The Need for Smarter Customer Engagement

By: Martin Morgan

Are some mobile operators heading down the road of their businesses becoming commodities where the only real differentiator, in the eyes of the customers, is price? Voice and text services, for so long the mainstay of their business, are now commoditized and data could well be heading the same way. Competition from OTT players offering free voice and messaging services, the roll out of free Wi-Fi services and the emergence of Wi-Fi first MVNOs means that, despite the contraction in numbers of mobile service providers, the mobile market is at its most competitive since it emerged over 30 years ago…

Digital Dodgeball: Making the Right Moves with Preemptive CEM

By: Jesse Cryderman

Communications service providers (CSPs) are in a pinch. As a result of competitive pressure and market demand, they must move faster than ever before or risk losing relevancy and customers. As we all know, however, velocity is not the first attribute associated with these mammoth organizations. In fact, it’s not even the fifth, or the tenth. The need for CSPs to transform in order to rapidly launch new services, quickly adapt to changing market conditions, and adopt a “fail fast” mentality has given rise to a focus on agility in the telecommunication sector…

5 Keys to an Agile Transformation for Success in B2B

By: Jesse Cryderman

Competitive pressure in telecommunications has never been greater. Last year, the leading mobile network operators in the U.S. collectively lost more than $45 Billion in market value, and voice and messaging revenues— historically the bread and butter for mobile network operators— continues to decline around the world. In India, for example, Credit Suisse warns that operators could lose half of their revenues to over-the-top (OTT) service providers. On the cable side, the story isn’t noticeably rosier…

Evolving into a Digital Service Provider (DSP)

By: Jesse Cryderman

Ten years ago, AT&T offered voice, Internet, and networking services. There was no mobile offering, U-verse or Digital Life, and the company has just merged with SBC communications. AT&T’s tagline by 2005 was “The World’s Networking Company” and it was an exemplary communications service provider (CSP) of the time. Compare that to the AT&T website today: the company now sells cell phones, many flavors of U-verse, Digital Life, DirecTV, wearable devices, cloud services, cybersecurity, M2M offerings, and more bundling and incentive options than you can imagine…

Personal Cloud and the Agile Operator Opportunity

By: Ted Woodbery

The rise of the internet of things and ongoing consumer demand for connected living is driving aggressive growth in the number of devices consumers activate. According to research by NESS (SES), there is now an average of 7.5 devices connected to the Internet in one household compared with an average of one device per household 10 years ago. This presents both benefits and challenges to the global operator community. On the one hand, a sharp increase in connected devices being added to the network leads to an increase in data revenue…

The Path to Becoming an Agile Operator

By: Jesse Cryderman

To the outsider, telecommunications is typified by two things: acronyms and Y chromosomes. To the insider, there’s so much more. There are buzzwords, like CEM and cloud and Big Data. Each of these feeds into a tech trend that is shaping telecom and its future, but also forms the basis for a lot of marketing fluff. One word that matters more than ever and hasn’t been exploited— yet— is agility. We often talk about “accelerating innovation with new services” or ”faster time to market,” but what we really mean is the ability to move quickly and change directions easily…

Enabling Global Connectivity with Satellite

By: John Gagliardo

As companies continue to expand globally, they’re looking for partners and services that can support them wherever their business takes them. This global expansion shines light on the challenges that arise when trying to stay connected everywhere. Whether you’re tracking a shipment, monitoring remote workers or simply trying to send an email, achieving worldwide connectivity might seem like an easy feat via terrestrial and cellular networks, but the reality is that these networks only cover less than 20 percent of the Earth…

The $4.6B Omni-channel Opportunity

By: Andy Tiller

Whichever way operators look today, the pressure is on. Traditional revenues are declining and the EU has ruled that roaming charges will be abolished by 2017. Operators need to invest in ever-faster networks and deliver smarter services to keep up with their competitors – and all the while there is the constant challenge of keeping customers happy and loyal by delivering excellent customer service.Keep your customers satisfied, and they will not only reward you with their loyalty, but also be receptive to new products and services, which in turn create new revenue streams…

Optimizing Profitability with Pure-Play NFV

By: Prayson Pate

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is envisioned as a way to allow communications service providers (CSPs) to replace network appliances with software modules running on standard servers, which can save money in terms of CapEx and OpEx. However, the focus of NFV is now shifting to enabling CSPs to be more agile and to create innovative new services to increase revenue and profitability. According to industry consultant Tom Nolle of CIMI, there are trillions of dollars in revenue upside to be gained when providers create new services by exploiting service agility and network flexibility…

Fueling Business Growth in the Digital Marketplace

By: Timo Ahomaki

The digital age has changed the way we communicate and interact with our family, friends, peers and colleagues. Digital technologies and online services are changing our lifestyle patterns, and the speed at which we embrace digital change is a real challenge for communication service providers (CSPs). Customers demand better end-to-end customer touchpoint experiences, frequent online interactions and full control over their services. These digital capabilities have been key to the revenue success of OTT service providers who have been instrumental in shaping the digital needs and expectations of customers…

China Leads in IoTThere are fewer acronyms in telecom today that are hotter than the Internet of Things (IoT). What region is innovating the fastest? The GSMA has published a new report in conjunction with Mobile World Congress Shanghai that positions China as the leader of the pack in the deployment of IoT technology. Letter from the Editor - August 2015

By: Tim Young

“Life is flux” - Heraclitus of Ephesos The world is in a constant state of change. Some changes are rapid, while others are gradual, but either way, it’s those most able to tap-dance through life’s changes who are able to come out ahead. Sure, change can be uncomfortable, and uncertainty can be unsettling, but I think most of us are all too aware that our industry, in particular isn’t going to stand still for very long. It’s not easy for carriers to be agile. Many are very big organizations with long histories and deep roots…
