“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

- Albert Einstein

Indeed. Within the world of technology and communications, it’s important to remember that the vast majority of problems come down to human error. Furthermore, even the problems that are not someone’s fault are allowed to grow into larger problems due to the inaction of people.  Sometimes that inaction is due to laziness. Sometimes it’s the fault of internal bureaucracy making everyone think that the problem is someone else’s to fix. And sometimes, problems aren’t fixed because we simply don’t know that they exist.

We need to know. We need to see problems while they are small so they can be quashed at the first sign of trouble and not be allowed to affect our customers and, ultimately, our bottom lines.  We need to approach network monitoring from a different enough standpoint that we avoid any myopia we may have possessed upon initially constructing the network. We need to think proactively, critically, and differently.

Sometimes, problems aren’t fixed because we simply don’t know that they exist.

In this issue of Pipeline, we explore some of the ins and outs of network monitoring. We get a sense for what role deep packet inspection can play in the overall monitoring landscape. We explore the state of network monitoring for the sake of security. We hear from a raft of C-Level executives from the OSS/BSS world (representing companies like NetQuest, Volubill, Infovista, ANDA, and more), as well as other experts in the space. We also bring you some fresh perspectives from Ed Finegold on the sales experience in his monthly BSS Report. As always, we also bring you the latest in opinion and news analysis from around the OSS/BSS community.

Enjoy.
