That’s Entertainment!
“We aren't in an information age, we are in an entertainment age.”
-Tony Robbins, Self-Help Guru
Ok, I know what you all may be thinking. You might be thinking that if you want to improve your self esteem or quit smoking, or overcome your penchant for procrastination, you’ll give Tony Robbins a call. But when it comes to entertainment and information, you can do without his advice. Then again, is it possible that the self-help guru has a point?
Many users rely on vast telecom networks to connect family members, maintain far-flung business dealings, and conduct research in the world’s largest resource library. But what about the users who could care less about telco/cableco battles, aren’t sure what VoIP is, and think that Gig-E is the guy who used to host MTV Cribs? For these users, entertainment is king. They want programming on-demand, feature-rich television offerings, and outstanding QoS, and they want it at an affordable price, and would often prefer to receive it from the same SP that meets their other needs. It is because of these users that IPTV, or any other technology that increases choice and competition, has a shot. It’s a tough battle, and one that many SPs are waging with ever-increasing ferocity.

But what technologies are the secret to success or failure in this ever-complicating landscape? In this issue of Pipeline, we explore the ins and outs of the new generation of entertainment, and what SPs, vendors, and consumers can look forward to as options increase and diversify. Also, in this issue, Pipeline takes a look at ten innovations that are changing the face of telecom and the companies that are making them a reality.
In the midst of this landscape of change and innovation, the need for information and, ultimately, entertainment, are not becoming any less scarce. If the technology behind the delivery of these necessities is changing, so be it. After all, any self-help guru worth his salt will surely tell you that change is a natural part of life.
All the best,
Tim Young
